Muzzle flashes are pretty simple to produce.  They can be very simple like those produced by Jeff Lew in Killer Bean or complex like the one presented here but the concept remains the same.  Put into simple terms the Flash itself is coloured and lit geometry that is sized and position as required for the timing of the flash.  One thing to realise is that the flash is very quick.  For a realistic flash you are looking at 3 frames total.

Hope the attached project helps.  Note that the gun model associated with the project has some DT materials that are not included with the project so just ignore those when loading the project.
