Writing my own original story then animating it has proved a little too daunting so I have decided to take an existing story and adapt it. There have been a few adaptations according to wikipedia and I even downloaded the first - a silent film version made in 1902. By current standards it's pretty awful but it did tell the story well. To make things easier I have decided to produce my own adaptation mainly due to the fact that I will be limiting myself to the re-use of the character models built of Hash's TWO project. As such I will have a little boy rather than a little girl etc. I have yet to flesh out the idea further but at least most of the characters are already built and rigged. TWO has given me the opportunity to improve my animation skills so I am feeling far more comfortable taking on such a project. [March 10, 2007] Looking for AdaptationsIt's been done before an although simply an exercise, I do not want to do something that has been done before. The Web reveals that there have been many attempts including the 1902 silent film version. These versions have the main character street selling, matches, flowers and lighters (for a more modern adaptation). The most recent version by Roger Allers and Disney is a 2D animated version put up for Animated Short at the 2007 Oscars (didn't win). A lovely adaptation set in Russia at the turn of the 20th century (or thereabouts). It also gives me some ideas about how to transition the scenes.
