Introduction

In 2006 I decided to take the plunge and enter into some part time study and extend my knowledge in the field of Astronomy.  Swinburne Astronomy Online (SAO) was the answer.  They offered 4 level of study, individual units, a Graduate Certificate for the completion of 4 units, a Graduate Diploma for the completion of 8 units and a Masters for the completion of 12 units.

HET603: Exploring Stars and the Milky Way

Completed Semester 1, 2006:
87% High Distinction

HET602: Exploring the Solar System

Completed Semester 2, 2006:
89% High Distinction

HET609: Astrophotography and CCD Imaging

Completed Semester 1, 2007:
91% High Distinction

HET604: Exploring Galaxies and the Cosmos

Completed Semester 2, 2007:
83% Distinction

At the end of 2007, after forking our $4,000AU and completing 4 units, I decided that I could not justify the expense of this course.  The course of study covers a large sphere of Astronomy but very little on my particular area of interest (its mostly stellar and extra galactic).  All of the work is self study so basically I was paying $1,000AU a unit for a course plan (study plan) and access to a forum of other students.  Hey I can do all this now for free and it's not like I will actually use the 'qualification' for anything.

I did receive my Graduate Certificate in Science - Astronomy, not that I am going to use it........
